The Science of Cancer: Origins & Pain-Relief Approaches

Despite there being at least 50% of cancer patients suffering from cancer pain, it remains a major issue.

Irrespective of the recommendations given by the WHO itself, cancer pain has rapidly increased over the past decade!

The struggle to reduce the prevalence of pain continues with studies showing that the frequency has increased by over 70%.

However, the majority of the population remains unaware of the seriousness of the situation and the overall healing process.

With these statistics in mind, we at Hempstreet have something special to offer our audience.

You will find further information at the end, along with an understanding of cancer and how medicinal cannabis can help with it.

Understanding Cancer & Its Origins

Cancer Cells: Metastasis
Cancer Cells: Metastasis

Cancer is a genetic disease in which the body’s cells grow uncontrollably and spread across the body.

The human body has many cells, but sometimes things don’t work well. This can also lead to the proliferation or growth of the damaged cells, resulting in tumors or lumps within the tissues.

These tumors can be divided into 2 categories and these are as follows:

  • Benign Tumors* (not cancerous & don’t spread across nearby tissues)
  • Malignant Tumors (cancerous ones that cause solid tumor formations)

But what about its origins?

Being a genetic disease, the cancer could be caused by the damaged DNA due to the harmful substance.

Apart from that, there are several other reasons like inheriting it from the parents or the cell division error.

*NOTE: Although benign tumors aren’t cancerous, they can be life-threatening, especially if it’s in the brain.

But, What Happens When The Cancer Cells Start to Spread?

Cancer is a disease that arises when abnormal cells divide exponentially in any part of the body resulting in tumorigenesis.

During the process of spreading across the body, the most malignant characteristic of any cancer cell is the cell’s ability to metastasize.

Unlike the benign cells, the movement of the malignant cells can grow rapidly and the spikes can be sudden.

Likewise, this makes it the most hazardous characteristic of these cells, leading to metastatic spread.

The deviations from normal malignant cells can conveniently be discussed, from the point of view of the cell surface, in the following categories:

  • Local invasion (the cells move outward from the point of the focus of origin amongst the surrounding normal cells.)
  • Metastasis (are passively transported and become widely disseminated.)
  • Disorganization (failure to form tissue of the arrangement characteristic of their normal counterparts.)
  • Persistent Growth (the malignant cell population keeps up a continuous growth by mitosis.)

Thus, the entire process can become a much more painful ordeal for the individuals battling against it.

Disease Management: Effective Methods

As the metastasis occurs within the patient’s body, elimination of the disease remains the only means of survival.

Among the several conventional methods like radiotherapy, there are a multitude of options available:

  • Hormone Therapy (slows or stops the growth of it that use hormones)
  • Hyperthermia (body tissue is heated to as high as 113 °F [45 °C] to kill abnormal cells)
  • Biomarker Testing (a way to look for genes, proteins, and other substances)
  • Immunotherapy (helps your immune system fight the disease)
  • Chemotherapy (uses drugs to kill abnormal cells)
  • Stem Cell Transplant (restore stem cells that grow into blood cells)
  • Photodynamic Therapy (uses a drug activated by light to kill the disease)

Even though these methods are some of the best ways to stop the disease from spreading throughout the body, the pain is too much.

Thus, being aware of the ways to manage cancer pain is essential for the patient to be at peace.

Final Inputs

Cancer is a genetic disorder that can spread throughout any part of the body regardless of the origin.

Awareness is crucial as at least half the population is affected, which has grown by 70% over time.
